Prior to this date  the route had been numbered N99 but when the N98 number became vacant in July 1995 it was felt that this number would be more appropiate as it shadowed most of day route 98

Diverted at Oxford Circus to run via Regent Street - Mortimer Street - Goodge Street - Chenies Street - Gower Street - Bloomsbury Street - Great Russell Street and terminate at Russell Square instead of Red Lion Square - this is a temporary measure whilst Crossrail work is carried out in Oxford Street
