COMMENTS
Prior to 25/4/81, the intermediary display for Route 154 read -

'Sutton Green, Wallington, Croydon, Norwood Junction'

With the 25/4/81 changes, the intermediary blind was amended to -

Rose Hill, Sutton Green, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington, Roundshaw

However, roughly only 60% of Sutton's Fleetlines received new blind sets incorporating this change and also new route 254.

For those buses still with old blinds, 'Norwood Junction' was blanked out on the 154 intermediary panel so it then read -

'Sutton Green, Wallington, Croydon'

However, for seemingly no logical reason, Sutton Garage staff also blanked out 'Norwood Junction' on the Route 157 intermediary display so this now read -

'Morden, Carshalton, Wallington, Croydon'.

Furthermore, this doctoring of the Route 157 display was also done to all blind sets, old and new.

As far as Route 157 was concerned (at that time only operating from Sutton on Sundays), this meant a needlessly shortened display.

Worse still though, this truncated 157 display was constantly mis-used on Route 154, even on buses with the new blind sets.  This was to the extent that it was almost a novelty to see a 154 running with the correct up-to-date via points.

So what you are actually seeing in the picture of DMS2406 is a bus which did have up-to-date 154 via blinds but erroneously displaying the needlessly blanked 157 display.
